I-680 Expressway/Carpool Project Completes One Year Early

Collaborative Partnering facilitated by VELO Group was instrumental to the success of the Interstate 680 Expressway/Carpool Project.  Spanning from Martinez to Walnut Creek, the final southbound 11-mile stretch of the almost 23-mile long lane opened one year ahead of schedule and on-budget.

The new segment is part of the $110 million I-680 Southbound Express Lane project implemented by Contra Costa Transportation Authority. Now part of the longest continuous HOV express lane in the Bay Area, the completed two-lane stretch will be used for carpooling and express buses, helping residents more quickly, efficiently and safely commute through Contra Costa County.

Furthermore, the employment of an accelerated project schedule, included allowing motorists to use the lane as a high-occupancy vehicle carpool lane while the MTC installed and tested the express lane tolling equipment. Construction work began on the highway project in October 2018, with completion originally planned for a late 2021 opening.

The I-680 project’s completion was marked with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony during which the project team and community applauded the project and commended the exceptional partnership of all involved.

This is a great example of CCTA and its partners working together to effectively and efficiently complete projects. I look forward to seeing the many benefits this brings to our county,” said Assembly Member Timothy Grayson, California State Assembly, 14th District.
