Sound Transit’s New Operations and Maintenance Facility

Congratulations to the Sound Transit Operations and Maintenance Facility East (OMF East) project team on completion of the new light rail base in Bellevue, Washington. Velo Group is pleased to have facilitated Partnering on this important public transportation project.

The new 165,150-square-foot facility, which accommodates the service, maintenance, storage and deployment of 96 light rail vehicles, is a key component of upcoming Link extensions to Northgate, Lynnwood, Federal Way and Redmond.

The OMF East boasts a cleaning and wash bay, around 300 poles supporting train power, storage for 1,300 essential items, and 14 service bays. Targeting LEED Gold, sustainable features include a rooftop 100kW solar array, interim bike and pedestrian trails, and other energy and environmentally efficient features. Up to 260 employees will staff the state-of-the-art facility, which will operate around the clock 365 days a year.

The $228-million project was designed and built by Hensel Phelps Construction Company. This included collaboration with the City of Bellevue on the master development plan entitlements along with planning for the site’s surplus property.

“With our partners, we have created a state-of-the art facility that will not only make light rail expansions possible, but provide many good jobs and help activate the Spring District with residential and commercial development,” said Sound Transit Board member and King County Council Chair Claudia Balducci in a recent Sound Transit news release.
